July 2, 2006: Our visit to the Port of Houston visitor's center. In 2004, MOCAH was commissioned by the Port of Houston Authority to produce a tile mosaic mural that would commemorate the 90th Anniversary of the POHA. Youth artists from the WorkSource were involved in the design and production of this 10'H x 120' long mosaic mural. We wanted this group of young artists to see first hand what another group of young artists were able to create given similar circumstances and the proper resources.
During our field trip we visited several public art projects that were designed and produced by other young artists involved in MOCAH's public art program. The trip included a visit to the Edison Middle School SPARK Park and the interior of the school wereMOCAH has produced over 25 tile mosaic murals. We also visited the WorkSource Northside Center were MOCAH produced the largest ceramic tile mosaic mural in Texas. Site Visit From the Prince Complex Kids
July 6, Rhonda Adams (far left) welcomes kids from the Prince Complex to MOCAH. She later explains the process of mosaic mural work as she give the kids a sneak preview of the completed first panel of the mosaic mural.
The kids from the Prince Complex get a chance to meet the young artists from the WorkSource and ask them questions about how they are working together to create the Fruits of Fifth Ward Mural. Reginald Adams shares background information on the historical figures and living legends in the mural design. The kids are thrilled to see James Prince, founder of the Prince Complex, in the mural.
