July 12, 2006: Elma Barrera of KTRK ABC 13 visited our studio for a sneak preview of the project and to hear from the artists how the projects is coming along. The artists were excited to know that their work was going to be on TV. Artists prepare to move part of the second section of the mural into the gallery space to make room for section three. The circular spaces that have been left our are where the ceramic portraits of the legends will go. Studio Visit From Children At Risk Staff & Interns July 18, Dr. Robert Sanborn(far left) , executive director, of Children At Risk brings staff and over 20 interns for a studio visit. Interns get a chance to speak to the artists and ask questions about the project, the process and what its like to be a part of such a project. July 20, Nancy Brumback (far left) ,camera woman, with HISD News Media Services visited to the studio to speak with some of the artists about their experience on the project. Rhonda Adams (top right images), co-founder of MOCAH lends a hand in setting tiles on the fourth and final section of the mural.
Artists apprentice take the final steps in the production phase by glazing the portraits. The last series of images are of the finished glazed portraits as they will look in the final mural.
The day has finally come-Installation! Above are images of the installation process. Artist apply a bed of mortar to the concrete sound barrier walls to affix the sheets of mosiacs to. Once the sheets are adhered to the mortar the artists come back to fill in all the spaces between each section to create a seamless panel of tile. The final step is to grout the entire mural.
