Beneva Williams Nyamu

September, 1956 found two parents who felt that 1956 Brown vs Topeka, Kansas Supreme Court decision to desegregate schools with all deliberate speed needed to be tested. Marion Williams escorted his daughter, Beneva, to McReynolds Jr. High School, a white school that was just 10 minutes from their home. (E.O. Smith Jr. High, a black school was several miles from their home). Also, in the same neighborhood, Delores Ross was escorted by George Nelson to Sherman Elementary School, a white school, that she had to pass on her way to Crawford, the black school, several miles away.

They were denied. A law suit was filed against the Houston Independent School District December, 1956. After almost 20 years, the magnet school plan presented by HISD was accepted by the court. The lawsuit was dismissed in 1985. Neither Delores nor Beneva were able to attend integrated schools in Houston

Beneva Williams Nyamu graduated from Phillis Wheatley Hign School in 1960. She attended several universities pursuing education in social work, public health and music. Her childhood desire to travel was fulfilled by traveling to many places around the world. Her employment allowed her to provide people with services in the US and in parts of Africa. Due to health issues, she returned to her neighborhood, just a short distance from her family home. She has spent the years continuing to work with people and organizations to provide vital services in the community. Her major concern has been health issues that affect her community. She focuses on prevention of health problems. The health issues of concern are HIV(Human Imminodeficiency Virus) and obesity.

Delores Ross Phlegm also graduated from Wheatley and she lives and works in Houston.
