The Hands of Hope set atop nine foot spiraling columns that create an entranceway into the park. Four foot bronze hands, modeled after Mickey's, cradle half hemispheres of the globe. The Hands of Hope represent Mickey's pursuits to end hunger here in the U.S. and in Africa, were Mickey forged new policy to counter the effects of famine and starvation in Ethiopia and other countries on the world largest continent.

The walkway through the Hands of Hope lead to the Exedra, a circular plaza that serves as a sitting area from park visitors. Within the sloping walls of the Exedra rest marble panels containing biographical information about Mickey's contributions, socially and politically. Centered between the biographical panels is a five foot circular portrait of Mickey Leland holding a starving child while on one of his many visits to Africa. The portrait, on porcelain enamel, is indicative of Mickey's relentless pursuit to end hunger in Africa and other parts of the world.

Throughout the park runs four bench high serpentine walls that serve as story walls for annual additions to the park. Each year an additional story panel will be added to the park commemorating other people and events that have had significant impact on society, locally, nationally, and globally. The first story wall, designed and produced by Reginald Adams, is a tile mosaic of Alice W. Rains, the mother of Mickey Leland. Along with a hand painted portrait of Ms. Rains is a quote by her about her son: "Mickey's legacy will live on and it is being carried on by the works of many all over the world. We are moving forward with remembrances of Mickey and his dream to help those who cannot help themselves." Mickey's motto was: " A man never stands so tall as when he bends down to help a child."

The parks construction was officially completed June 30, 2000 and the dedication has yet to be announced. Come and see for yourselves the innovative work that artists are doing to show how artists, communities, and businesses can collaborate successfully.
