ALTA Alternative Learning Transitional Academy:
Learn, Educate, Graduate is another public art project of the Museum Of Cultural Arts, Houston (MOCAH). The project is made possible through the generous support of the Houston Afterschool Allstars and through the hard work and dedication of, ASAS Executive Direcotor, Carolyn Teas. After completing “Doorways To The Future”, a mural project at Edison Middle School, Carolyn Teas conceived the idea of creating a similar tile mosaic mural for ALTA Charter School.
Ms. Teas selected Reginald Adams, public artist and Executive Director of MOCAH, as the lead artist. Artist Prince Maduekwe also helped to execute the project. The key objectives for the project are:
- Engage ALTA students in a hands-on art project.
- Create a permanent work of art for the school’s campus.
Reginald is working with approximately 20 students from ALTA to create three designs, which will be transformed into tile mosaic murals. The designs reflect the students ideas about what learning, education, and graduation are about. The class has been divided into three teams and each team is respectively developing an original design for their mural. These images below are documentation of the design phase of the project. Additional images are forthcoming.
