“Education is the Foundation” is another public art project of the Museum Of Cultural Arts, Houston (MOCAH), through the ArtworkZ Public Art & Design Program.
The purpose of the project was to create permanent public artworks that support the theory that education is the foundation to a bright and successful future. The project provided students from Harlem Elementary School hands-on opportunities to create art that will have a permanent home in the school’s new SPARK Park. As well, this project provided the students an opportunity to work directly with professional artists that specialize in designing and developing innovative and socially conscience public art.
This full scope of the project entails artistic elements including:
- Park entranceway sculpture
- Hand painted tiles by students for the outdoor classrooms
- Tile mosaic mural for the main outdoor classroom
The Park entranceway sculpture has been designed by public artist and executive director of MOCAH, Reginald Adams.
The sculptures were fabricated by San Luis Fabricators at MOCAH Studios, located 2500 Summer St. The concrete and tile mosaic sculpture depicts four children standing atop books while holding books over their heads. The sculpture supports a sign displaying the name of the school and park in brightly colored tile mosaics.
