The Museum of Cultural Arts, Houston (MOCAH) is working in collaboration with Kashmere High School to create a Beacon sculpture for the new SPARK Park. The KHS Community Arts Initiative will document the history and cultural heritage of Kashmere High School in preparation for the celebration of the school’s 50th Anniversary in October 2007.
Through a series of community art workshops, oral history interviews, field trips and special guest appearances, students from KSH will learn about the rich heritage and history of the school, neighborhood and alumni that have shaped and forged their community while creating a permanent work of art representing the pride of Kashmere High School. (Beacon Art Project)
This project will allow KHS students to combine art, sculpture and community organizing into a project-based learning experience. The program will extend from now until October 2007. On the first Saturday of each month, at our Ram Rallys, we will host a community outreach day to provide students, teachers, parents, alumni and local community members with the opportunity to become a part of the art project. Community engagement will include, but not be limited to:
Oral History Interviews
Development of a timeline from 1957-2007
Guest Speaker Appearances
Memorial Pavers for the base of the Beacon Art Project
Custom handmade tiles for the Beacon Art Project
Student Council, Future Business Leaders of America representatives and other students are working closely with MOCAH to design, produce, market and promote the project throughout the school and community. Below are images of the work in progress.
