This painted mural at the newly renovated Rucker Elementary School is another public art project of the Museum Of Cultural Arts, Houston (MOCAH), through the ArtworkZ Public Art & Design Program. The purpose of this project was to give students the opportunity to not only express themselves artistically, but also improve their school. Guided by lead artist Nell Byrum and assistant artist Katie Odermatt, a group of 30 students, ranging from second to fifth grade, designed and produced a 4ft x 80ft painted mural. The mural reflects the children’s perspectives on a past- to present- to future timeline. The mural begins under water, progresses upwards to their community, and then soars into outer space and to what could possibly become our future. The children’s use of vibrant colors combines their imagination with a look at the world through their own eyes. Their portrayal of this theme embodies their youth and innocence and the hope for a peaceful tomorrow.
Resources for this project were provided through the 21st Century Learning Grant and the Houston Independent School District.
