The mosaic mural project at the Wendel D. Ley YMCA, will encompass the building’s two front columns in order to welcome visitors and create a connection between the people of the community and their community center. Artist Rose Toro led a class of between 10 and 15 youth through the design phase and physical production of this mural. In allowing the youth of the community to play such a pivotal role in the restoration of their community center, a bond is initiated that will continue to enrich the community for decades to come. The design incorporates the 6 principles that the YMCA encourages in their youth programs, Faith, Love, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility, and Caring. The imagery in the mosaic represents the different physical, spiritual and artistic programs offered at the Wendel D. Ley YMCA, such as soccer, racquetball, music, and swimming. The mural also encompasses the beauty of nature along with images born from the children’s imagination.
